Summary

This paper presents a pilot study comparing three LLM-driven NPC dialogue systems and their impact on player experience across different player types. Our findings suggest that open-ended dialogue systems, while offering greater expressive freedom, tend to favor casual players who benefit from the reduced cognitive overhead of natural conversation over menu-driven dialogue trees.
